The law is in our blood.
It may sound corny, but it’s true. Lars Liebeler’s father, Wesley J. Liebeler, left the farm in North Dakota and became a lawyer. He worked on Wall Street and in 1963 became an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of President Kennedy. He later became a professor and, for over 35 years at UCLA, George Mason University, and Yeshiva University, taught antitrust, law and economics, and constitutional law.Paul Thaler’s father, Martin Thaler, practiced law for his entire career in the Washington, D.C. area. As a partner with the powerhouse firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges, Mr. Thaler opened and ran the firm’s office in Budapest, Hungary. Mr. Thaler was a nationally-recognized expert in banking and finance.
Celia Barrett Liebeler, Lars’s mother, was executive secretary for United States Supreme Court Justice Charles Whittaker, and later worked for Henry Friendly on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She was working for Justice Whittaker during the critical time period in which the Court was overseeing the orders implementing the Brown v. Board of Education decision from 1954.
Paul Thaler’s mother, Barbara Mishkin, practiced law for more than 25 years with the Washington, D.C. law firm Hogan & Hartson. During that time, she gained national recognition for her expertise in the field of patients' rights (including the right to refuse treatment) and advance directives for health care, bioethics and advised many of the country’s leading hospitals and educational research institutions regarding scientific and research misconduct.
Susan Liebeler, Lars’ stepmother, was Chairman of the International Trade Commission and special assistant to the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mrs. Liebeler was nominated by President Reagan for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She taught corporations and securities law for years at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and is currently the president of Lexpert Research Inc., a legal research company in Malibu, California.
Past is prologue. The firm’s founders are keenly aware of those family members who have set high standards in the legal profession. We take inspiration from their work and dedication, and strive to meet the same high standards.
